Eternal Strength: Stay Strong At Any Age
As we get older, we don’t necessarily have to get more frail. Building strength is not a flash-in-the-pan fad, but something you should treat as a lifelong commitment...
When you’re first starting out with weightlifting, it can be a bit daunting. It takes time to sculpt and shape your body, whether you want bigger arms or you want to work on your chest. But for those of you new to weightlifting, these are some of the best weightlifting techniques and tips for beginners:
#1 Know your goal
It’s important to have it clear from the outset what you are hoping to gain from weightlifting – more definition? Slim down or beef up? The more specific you can be, the more likely you are to reach your goal.
#2 Start light
Know your limits and don’t go charging in and give yourself an injury. Start with something you can manage and build up to heavier weights.
#3 PMA
Stay positive, and stay focused on your goal. See If you can find someone to train with to spot you and keep you motivated.
#4 Gradually increase the weight
Although we urge you to start with lighter weights if you’re new to weightlifting, try not to get stuck in a rut with the same amount. Instead, gently increase the weight over time and you’ll see a noticeable difference.
#5 Mix it Up
Try to avoid working the same muscle group consecutively and keep your workout varied. This will prevent you from injury or over training.
#6 Stretch it Out
Make sure you stretch before and after you lift. This prevents pain the next day, and prevents injury.
#7 Rest
Rest days are just as important as lifting days. Aim to schedule at least two rest days per week to allow your body to heal and recharge. Try to get enough sleep so that your body can build muscle.
#8 Eat right
Try to get enough of the good stuff: veggies, protein, carbs and water. Eating junk food and over indulging in alcohol will undo all the good you put in when you lift.
