What is Yoga?

The origins of yoga have been said to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions over 5,000 years ago. This ancient form of exercise aims to improve strength and flexibility and improve mental and physical well being. Yoga usually consists of a series of movements incorporating body strength and a focus on breathing, but has been adapted to many different forms.

Following the popularity of Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th century, yoga was introduced to the west and is now a popular form of relaxation and exercise.

Why do yoga?

Yoga has undergone many scientific trials which suggest it to be a safe and effective way of exercising, which will help not only to improve strength and flexibility but also balance. Some studies also suggest that regular yoga helps people with heart disease, high blood pressure, depression and stress.

How fit do I have to be to do yoga?

Yoga is available to people of different fitness ranges, and you can join a class to suit your level. To sign up to an intermediate level, you may need a certain amount of flexibility and experience already, so it is always best to speak to course instructors or yoga professionals ahead of booking, to ensure that you find the best class for you.

Do I need to be flexible?

Yoga is designed to help you work on your flexibility, and improve it. You do not need to be super flexible to join a beginners class. The more you practise, the greater a difference you will notice in your flexibility.

Which is the best type of yoga?

There are many variations of yoga, from Iyengar to Ashtanga to Bikram to Hip Hop Yoga. Some styles require more energy than others, or have a different focus. No one style trumps another, the key is to find a class which suits your ability level, and then to experiment with different types of yoga until you find one you love.

ONE LDN has a range of yoga classes, which you can find on our timetable.
